Three self-catering apartments located ‘above the shop’ in an 18th century former Shirehall and home to Make Holt, a unique concept store founded in 2020. In both the store and the apartments above, Aviva wanted to reuse as many of the salvageable materials from the building and retain the original features wherever possible.
As a textile artist working with natural plant dyes, Aviva named the three apartments after traditional dyes used in Norfolk, a county famous for its wool and textiles. Madder (red) Indigo (blue) and Weld (yellow)
Each apartment was fitted with bepoke handmade furniture, light fittings and textiles. The paint was provided by Fenwick & Tilbrooke, a local Norfolk paint company.
Each unit was furnished and styled by Aviva using the work of over 50 local artisans - with many of the pieces available to purchase from the Make Holt store downstairs.
Taking inspiration from her Moroccan connection, Aviva styled this apartment with walls painted in ‘Marrakech’ and a bespoke hand knotted rug made with wool that she dyed using madder.
Woven cushions and throws add warmth to the scheme with hand made ceramics and artwork adding the finishing touches.
Upcycled floorboards from the building were used to create the kitchen units with built in seating in the double height living space featured woven wall art, willow weave light fittings and another bespoke carpet designed by Aviva using indigo dyed wool.
This apartment featured double height living space, built in seating and a feature metal bath/jacuzzi in the mezzanine bedroom. Aviva worked with a palette of yellow shades from pomegranate dye with accents in teal and charcoal to bring lightness to the North facing space.
